Miniature gilt-edged pale blue enamel Greek cross with out-turned ends to the arms, with eyelet and gilt ribbon suspension bar with oak leaves and acorns denoting an army award; the face with a centrally-imposed four-pointed faceted star with a circular central medallion bearing a Zimbabwe bird within a ring inscribed ‘FOR BRAVERY’ with laurel leaves above; the reverse plain gilt; diameter 19.44mm (0.76 inch); on original ribbon. The Cross was instituted in October 1980 to replace the Silver Cross of Rhodesia and is Zimbabwe’s second-highest award for bravery. Versions exist for the Army, Air Force, Police, Prison Service and Civilians, each distinguished by the symbol on the suspension bar.
This cross is conferred upon military personnel and civilians in recognition of extraordinary acts of bravery and valour.
There are five versions of the Silver Cross of Zimbabwe.
Army awards have oak leaves on the suspension bar; Air Force awards have an eagle with stretched wings on the suspension bar; Police awards have the balance of justice on the suspension bar; Prison Service awards have a key on the suspension bar; and the rare Civilian awards have flame lilies on the suspension bar.
Also, the name of the recipient may be impressed on the reverse.
