The Medal for the Battle of Chacabuco (Medalla por la Batalla de Chacauco) was authorized by the new government of Bernardo O'Higgins two months later he was appointed general director of Chile.
This medal was awarded to those Officers and troops who taking part of the battle of Cachabuco on February 12, 1817, when the combained Chilean-Argentine force defeated the royalist troops under the command of Brigadier Rafael Maroto, and took control of Santiago. This battle is considered as a key triumph for the War of Independece in Latin America.
The Medal was authorized with three different version. The firts two featured a pentagonal shape, and were struck in London; likely awarded to Officers and high ranks personnel. The third medal was oval, struck in Chile, likely for troops.
It is not clear if the composition of the Medal denoted the rank of the recipient.
In MedalBook, this Medal is classified into two Types. Type I includes the two first pentagonal versions, while Type II consists of the oval medal.
