History

The Medal for the Battle of Maypo (Medalla por la Batalla de Maipu) was the second military medal authorized by the new government of Bernardo O'Higgins in Chile. It was awarded to those Officers and troops who took part of the battle of Maypo on April 5, 1818, when the combined Chilean-Argentine force defeated a regrouped royalist troops under the command of Mariano Osorio. This battle consolidated Chile's independence and ended Spain's hope of retaking control over Chile.

The composition of the Medal denoted the rank of the recipient. The Medal was authorized in Gold, Silver, and Bronze. These Medals were struck at the National Mint (Casa de la Moneda), Santiago.

This Medal was also authorized with two different versions. The first featured a rounded shape, and the second was an eight-pointed star.

In MedalBook, this Medal is classified into two Types. Type I includes the rounded medal, while Type II consists of the star.
