Instituted 1909. Type I with Stars in the Knees of the Cross. A finely made cross in silver consisting of a large eight pointed, hand finished silver field, obverse centre presents a red enamel cross with silver stars in each quadrant, centre medalion hand painted with motto INTER INIMICOS CHARITAS, reverse centre with blue cypher and ORDEN DE HONORY MERITO, hallmarked with boars head on integral suspenion denoting French silver and manufacture, measuring 48 mm (w) x 67 mm (h - inclusive of green enameled laurels), on an original bow-tied commander's ribbon, chipping evident in the green enamels on the wreath, otherwise the enamels are intact, near very fine.
The Order was instituted by Presidential Decree on January 31, 1913. The Cuban Red Cross was founded on May 14, 1909, and soon after it was allowed to grant awards in the country. The Order was awarded for meritorious services according to the rank of the recipient. The Order was abolished in 1977. Type I has stars in the arms of the cross. Type II has rays in the arms of the cross.
