History

The China Relief Expedition Medal was authorized by Navy Department Special Orders on June 27, 1908. The Bronze Medal was awarded to Navy and Marine Corps personnel in recognition of service in China either ashore or as a crew member onboard 1 out of 11 specialized naval vessels in Chinese waters between May 24, 1900, and May 27, 1901.

There are multiple versions of the Medal which vary by inscription. The reverse of the Medal differs for Navy and Marine Corp recipients by the engraving of the service name. In 1913, a later striking of the Medal resulted in a change of design of the obverse inscription from "CHINA RELIEf EXPEDITION 1901" to "CHINA RELIEF EXPEDITION 1900."
