The Defence Superior Service Medal was established by President Gerald Ford by Executive Order on February 6, 1976. The Silver Medal is presented by the Secretary of Defence to any member of the United States Armed Forces in recognition of superior meritorious service over a sustained period of time in a position of significant responsibility with the Office of the Secretary of Defence, The Organization of the Joint Chief of Staff, or another defence agency or joint activity that is designated by the Secretary of Defence. The Medal is often awarded to senior Officers. The United States military Officers serving as astronauts for space shuttle missions are also eligible for the award.
The Medal may be awarded posthumously.
Subsequent awards of the Medal are denoted by a silver or bronze oakleaf emblem worn on the ribbon.
The Medal is similar in design to the Defence Distinguished Service Medal to save costs.
