History

The Meritorious Service Medal was established by President Lyndon B. Johnson on January 16, 1969. The Bronze Medal is awarded to members of the Armed Forces of the United States in recognition of acts and services that are comparable to those which qualify for the Legion of Merit, but who are in a duty of lesser responsibility. Until 2001, outstanding meritorious achievement or service to the United States outside of combat was recognized by the award. However, since September 11, 2001, the Medal may also be bestowed in lieu of the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in a designated combat theatre. Members of Armed Forces of friendly foreign nations are also eligible for the award.

A bronze oak leaf emblem is worn on the ribbon to denote an additional award and a silver oak leaf emblem is worn on the ribbon to denote additional 5 awards for members of the Army and Air Force. Likewise, a gold star is worn on the ribbon of members of the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard to denote an additional award while a silver star is worn to denote an additional 5 awards. There may be additional emblem clasps authorized for award with the Medal.
