History

This medal is the highest civilian honour awarded by the Republic of India. It is conferred upon individuals in recognition of outstanding service, in any field, to the nation.

Upon its institution, membership was limited to individuals who demonstrated exceptional achievements in the fields of literature, science, public service, and the arts. This criteria was expanded to include all fields in December 2011.

This Order is only awarded 3 times annually.

The obverse Devanagari inscription translates to "Bharat Ratna". The reverse Devanagari inscription translates to "Truth alone triumphs".
