This medal was founded by Boris III and it was conferred upon individuals that served as Combatants or Non-Combatants in WWI.

It was also awarded to the next of kin of recipients killed during the war, and to Bulgarian Allies that served in the war.

Each type of recipient was awarded an identical medal, but the medal itself worn on a unique ribbon.

The Combatant ribbon is red with one green and two white stripes along the exterior edges.

The Non-Combatant ribbon is red with one green and two white stripes along the exterior edges and one white stripe through the centre of the ribbon.

The Next of Kin ribbon is red with one green and two white stripes along the exterior edges and one black stripe through the centre of the ribbon.

When the medal was conferred upon women it was worn on a bow ribbon.
