This medal was conferred to recognize merit in combat, within war and border disputes. The medal was also awarded to recognize 10 years of exceptional work within the armed forces.

There are two main versions of this medal.

The medals issued first were awarded between 1955-1960, and they feature the inscription "ČSR" on the obverse.

The medals issued second were awarded between 1960-1989, and they feature the inscription "ČSSR" on the obverse.
