History

The Order of the Redeemer was established by the Fourth National Assembly in 1829, the final year of the Greek War of Independence. The Order was not officially instituted until the decree of May 20, 1833. It is the highest order of merit in Greece.

The name and the form of the Order were chosen by the Assembly as a reminder that the Greek nation had been liberated with divine assistance.

The Order is conferred upon Greek citizens for distinguished service in the Navy, the Army, the diplomatic and judicial corps, public service and administration, agriculture, industry, commerce, arts and science, or any other outstanding service to the nation. It was originally awarded to Greek citizens for their service in the Greek War of Independence.

The decorations are classed into two types. Type I decorations feature the portrait of King Otho I on the reverse while Type II decorations have the portrait of Jesus Christ. This change prompted the portrait side to be worn as the obverse. Since the abolition of the Greek Monarchy in 1974 the decorations have undergone additional changes. From 1975-1984 the decorations did not have a surmounting crown and since 1984 they have been surmounted by a wreath of oak and laurel. Type II medallions also differ in inscription.

The Type II Gold Knight obverse inscription translates to "Thy right hand, O Lord, is majestic in strength" (Exodus XV, 6), and the reverse inscription translates to "The Fourth National Assembly of the Hellenes at Argos - 1829."
