History

The Order was founded by Alexander of Farnese, and it was originally known as the Jar of the Salution (la Jarra de la Salutacion), only later coming to be known as the Order of the Stole and Jar (la Stola et Jarra).

The insignia decorating the collar is believed to have been a griffin, to demonstrate a strong love of God and the Virgin Mary.

The Order was known to early historians as the Order of the Lily.
