History

The Order was founded by Victor Emmanuel III, and it was primarily conferred upon the indigenous populations of Italian colonies who had rendered meritorious service and brought honour to Italy.

It was also awarded to prominent Italian nationals for exceptional service in the colonies.

Since it was meant to chiefly recognize the service of indigenous populations, the number of Italian citizens who were members of the Order could not exceed half of the total number of the allotted members for each Order grade.

This Order became obsolete in 1943, with the collapse of the Italian Empire, and was officially discontinued in 1946.

The monogram of the Victor Emmanuel III "VE" is featured in Gold on the obverse medallion of the Order grades.

The Officer grade was restricted to 50 recipients per year.
