History

This medal was founded by Emperor Franz I to reward individuals, who were unable to recitative the Austrian Orders, for honourable service and achievements.

The Type I medals feature a young right facing portrait of Emperor Franz I on the obverse.

The Gold Medal could be awarded on a gold chain for very special and meritorious achievements.

The Gold Medal on the gold chain was conferred upon Andreas Hofer for defending Tirol in 1809 against the French.
