This medal was founded to commemorate the ceremonial coronation of Franz I as the Holy Roman Emperor.

It was awarded to members of the Emperor's cohort, without any consideration of rank.

The Type I awards feature the image of an Imperial crown hovering over a crossed sword and scepter tied together with a sash and an sovereign's orb on the reverse medallion.
