History

Established by King Christian VIII, this medal is awarded to recognize Danish or international writers, musicians, artists, and scientists for remarkable, continual service to Danish culture. Both men and women were eligible to receive this award. When conferred upon women it was awarded on a bow.

During the reign of King Christian IX, the medal was not awarded.

The obverse of the medal consists of the portrait and name of the awarding monarch, and the rim of the medal is engraved with the recipient's name.

During the reign of King Frederik VII, the gold medal could be awarded with a crown surmounting the medal.

Frederik VII was King of Denmark from 1848 to 1863.
