A circular medal constructed of tombac. The obverse bears the crowned cipher "F" for Duke Friedrich II, encompassed by the inscription "TREUE DIENSTE BEI DER FAHNE" (loyal services to the flag). The reverse bears the Roman numeral "XII" (12). On a loop for suspension, on a green ribbon. Weighing 12.73 grams.
The Army Long Service Decoration was instituted by Duke Friedrich II on January 1, 1914 to replace the Army Long Service Bars.
The Medal for 12 Years was conferred upon Officers and Enlisted Men who rendered 12 years of service with the armed services. In addition, the medal was also conferred upon members of the police force who rendered 12 years of service.
