Physical Description

A circular medal constructed of silver. The obverse bears the crowned cipher "AFL" and an open ended laurel wreath at the bottom. The reverse bears the inscription "FÜR FÜNFZIGJÄHRIGE DIENSTTREUE" (for fifty years of loyal service) with an open ended oak leaf wreath at the bottom. On a loop for suspension, with a green ribbon with white stripes.

History

The Civil Long Service Medal was instituted by Duke Carl Alexander in 1835. The medal was awarded in gold and in silver to civil servants and court officials in recognition of 50 years of loyal and distinguished service. The stamp was created by Brosenius from Quedlinburg. The medal was produced by D. Loos & Sohn, Berlin. In 1843, only senior officials and clergy were eligible for the gold medal. In 1863, the award was discontinued, but retained in a different form for the united duchy of Anhalt.
