A circular medal constructed of silver. The obverse bears the coat of arms of Anhalt encompassed by an oak leaf wreath. The reverse bears the insignia of the fire department, a fire helmet with two crossed axes below. An open-ended laurel wreath tied with a ribbon in a bow is below the insignia and above is the inscription "FÜR TREUE DIENSTE" (for loyal service). On a loop for suspension, on a green, red and white striped ribbon. Weighing 12 grams.
The Fire Service Medal was established by Duke Friedrich I on November 21, 1888. The medal was conferred upon voluntary firefighters who rendered 25 years of uninterrupted service with a fire brigade. Professional firefighters and individuals who held other positions within the firefighting services were also eligible to receive the medal. Upon retirement, recipients could keep the award. Approximately 1,500 Fire Service Medals were awarded.
