Physical Description


A circular medal constructed of gold. The obverse bears the image of King Max Joseph I of Bavaria, encompassed by the inscription "MAXIMILIAN JOSEPH KÖNIG VON BAYERN". The medal is stamped "LOSCH F." for Joseph Losch, under the bust. The reverse bears the inscription "DEM VERDIENSTE UM FÜRST UND VATERLAND" encompassed by a wreath of oak and laurel. On a loop for suspension.

History


On January 1, 1806, the elector accepted the title of king (Max Joseph I). The Type II medals were melted down in favour of the new Civil Merit, Type III medals. The Type III medals were issued multiple times.

The first group of medals were issued in 1808, the second group of medals were issued in 1840, and the third group of medals were issued between 1840-1918.
