Physical Description and Item Details


A circular medal constructed of gold. The obverse bears the bust of King Ludwig II encompassed by the inscription “LUDWIG II KOENIG V. BAYERN”. Marked under the bust with “VOIGT” for Carl Friedrich Voigt. The reverse bears the personification of victory holding a wreath and a palm. Above is the inscription “FÜR WISSENSCHAFT UND KUNST”. The medal is topped with an ornate arabesque design and a loop for suspension. On a light blue and white ribbon.

History


The Ludwig Medal for Arts and Sciences was established by King Ludwig II on August 25, 1872. It was awarded to individuals for achievements in the fields of art and science, and industry, trade, and agriculture.

The medal could be awarded to citizens and foreigners. Women could also receive the Ludwig Medal for Arts and Sciences. Six medals were awarded per year in the field of art and science, but exceptions were made to award additional medals. Individuals could not apply for the medal, the King reserved the right to present the medal to individuals. After the death of the recipient, the medal had to be returned.
