History

The Ludwig Order was established by King Ludwig I of Bavaria on August 25, 1827, the day of his birthday. The Ludwig Order was the highest service award for 50 years. Individuals who displayed meritorious service within administrative bodies which dealt with matters of the state, church, and war were eligible for the order. Years spent on military campaigns counted twice, but years in military school did not count towards years of service.

The Ludwig Order has two classes, a Cross of Honour and an Honour Medal. The Cross of Honour was presented to Officers and officials of the army and Officers and clergy in the civil sector. The Honour Medal was presented to those with a lower rank.
