Physical Description


A circular medal constructed of silver. The obverse bears the bust of King Wilhelm IV. The reverse bears the inscription "FÜR SECHSZEHN JÄHRIGE TREUE DIENST" (for 16 years of loyal service). The edge of the medal is engraved with the recipient's name. On a loop for suspension, with a red and navy blue striped ribbon.

History


The Wilhelm Long Service Medal was founded on March 2, 1837 by King Wilhelm IV. The medal was conferred upon members of the Hanoverian Army to recognize long and meritorious service. The medal was designed by the engraver Fritz in Brunswick. When calculating service time, years at war were counted twice. The Type I medal was awarded from 1837 to 1841.

The Silver Medal was conferred upon individuals with the rank of Non-Commissioned Officer to Soldier for 16 years of service. This medal is very rare.
