History

The Merit Medal was founded by Prince Adolf Georg of Schaumburg-Lippe and Prince Paul Friedrich Emil Leopold of Lippe, and was conferred upon individuals who rendered meritorious services to Princely House.

Prince Adolf Georg renewed the Merit Medal in 1885, his 25th ruling year. The obverse of this medal features his portrait.

The Type II medals do not feature a surmounting crown.

Some sources falsely claim that this Medal was first awarded in 1870 and that a version composed of bronze was produced.
