History

The Medal for Art and Science was originally founded by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz and was conferred in recognition of outstanding achievements in the areas of the art and science.

On February 28, 1859, Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II created statutes for the medal.

In 1900, it was determined that the silver medal could also be worn on a ribbon from around the neck. Women wore the decoration on a bow ribbon.

The Type I medals feature a left-facing portrait of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz.
