History

The Merit Medal was instituted by Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich V and was conferred upon individuals who had rendered exceptional service that benefited not only the Grand Ducal House, but the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz as a whole. It could also be conferred in recognition of praiseworthy deeds and merit in the workplace.

The Bronze Medal was awarded to low-ranking servants, labourers, and officials at the Mecklenburg-Strelitz court. It was also conferred upon individuals who served at the courts of allied houses.

The Medal could also be conferred in recognition of 40 or 50 years of faithful labour within a specific service.
