History

The Bravery Medal was originally instituted by Duke Friedrich August I with the aim of encouraging military enlistment.

It was conferred upon non-commissioned officers and enlisted men for demonstrating outstanding bravery in combat.

The recipients could be citizens of Nassau or foreign citizens.

The Type I medals were awarded for participation in the Siege of Colburg, the Austrian and Spanish campaigns (1808-1813), and the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
