History

The Fire Service Merit Decoration was founded by Emperor and King of Prussia, Wilhelm and was awarded in recognition of 25 years of meritorious and virtuous service within the Prussian fire service. It was also conferred in recognition of acts of merit beyond the call of duty within the fire service.

The decoration fell into disuse following the fall of the Prussian monarchy in 1918. However, it was reinstated in 1926 by the Prussian State Ministry. This version was followed by an updated version in 1933.
