The Decoration for Art and Science was founded by Prince Heinrich XIV of Reuss-Gera (Junior Line) and was conferred in recognition of outstanding achievements in the fields of art and science. The award could be conferred upon citizens of Reuss as well as foreigners.

In 1912, the award was extended to include Reuss-Greiz (Senior Line).
