History

The Medal for Loyalty and Merit was established by Prince Heinrich XXII (Junior Line) and was conferred upon individuals who demonstrated loyalty to the royal house by performing acts of extraordinary merit. It could also be conferred in recognition of commendable work that benefited the prince and the people of Reuss.

This medal was conferred upon individuals who did not qualify for the Civil Honour Cross.

In 1891, crossed swords were introduced to denote military merit. Originally the swords were crossed through the insignia on the obverse, but after 1872, the swords attached under the eyelet of the medal.
