History

The Honour Medal for Home Service was instituted by Duke Carl Eduard of Saxony-Coburg and Gotha on July 19, 1918. The decoration was awarded to persons, regardless of gender, rank, or status, who had performed meritorious service to further the war goals or support charitable efforts, or who had provided exceptional services towards the duke or dukedom during the war. The model for this medal was the Saxe-Weimar Honour Cross for Home Service, established on January 27, 1918.

The decoration was awarded with an accompanying document and did not have to be returned upon the recipient’s death. It was manufactured by L. Chr. Lauer in Nuremberg.
