Physical Description


A smooth circular medal with a partial raised edged, constructed of silver. The obverse features the left-facing portrait of Duke Carl Eduard and Duchess Victoria Adelheid, with the semi-circular inscription ‘VICTORIA ADELHEID = CARL EDUARD’ along the top half. To the right is the stamp cutter’s signature ‘MAX V. KAWACZYNSKI N. D. LEBEN SC.’. To the right of the eyelet is the silver mark ‘SILBER 0,990’. The reverse features the coats of arms of duke and duchess with helmets on top and a crown above those. At the top is an arched ribbon with the inscription ‘TREU UND FEST’ (‘loyal and steadfast’). The coats of arms are tied by a ribbon to a small rose bush. At the bottom is the date ‘11 OCTOBER 1905’ and the stamp cutter’s signature ‘MAX VON KAWACZYNSKI FECIT’. On a loop for suspension, on a red ribbon with two broad white stripes.

History


The Wedding Medal of Duke Carl Eduard was instituted by the duke on November 11, 1905 on the occasion of his marriage with Princess Victoria Adelheid of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg. It was awarded to those who were part of the two families and their courts, as well as those who participated in the festivities in an outstanding way.

The stamp was cut by Max von Kawaczynski, the medals were manufactured by L. Chr. Lauer in Nuremberg.
