Physical Description

A George’s cross with pebbled, curved arms and raised, smooth edges inside a circle, constructed of bronze. On top of the decoration sits a mobile crown. The circle around the cross is made of an oak leaf wreath tied with four ribbons on the obverse. The obverse centre medallion features an entwined tripled monogram ‘C’. The reverse is similar, except that the centre medallion features a Saxon coat of arms and the circle around the cross features the inscription ‘FÜR VERDIENST IM KRIEGE 1914/15’ (‘for merit in war’).
On a loop for suspension, on a white ribbon with a board black side stripe on the left and a broad green side stripe on the right, and a narrow centre stripe made of a black left half and green right half.

History

The War Merit Cross for Women was introduced on March 3, 1915 by Duchess Charlotte of Saxe-Meiningen. The cross was conferred upon women and young ladies who rendered exceptional voluntary service during the First World War.
