Physical Description and Item Details


A smooth circular medal with a raised edge, constructed of gold. The obverse features the right-facing portrait of Grand Duke Carl August with the circular inscription ‘CAROLVS AVGVSTVS MAGNVS DVX SAXONIAE’ (‘Carl August Grand Duke of Saxony’). At the bottom is the stamp cutter’s signature ‘BARRE F.’. The reverse features a wreath of ivy and roses with the inscription ‘DOCTARVM FRONTIVM PRAEMIA’ (‘reward for erudite foreheads’) in the centre. On a loop for suspension, either on a red ribbon or on a black ribbon with an inner yellow and outer green border on each side.

History


The Merit Medal ‘DOCTARVM FRONTIVM PRAEMIA’ was instituted by Grand Duke Carl August of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach in 1822. The medal was awarded as a reward for scholars and artists.

The medal was produced both as a non-wearable decoration and with a loop, worn on a ribbon.
