History

The medal was originally founded by King Anton and his co-regent Friedrich August, and it was awarded to recognize individuals that risked their own lives to rescue a victim from mortal peril.

The Type III medals featured the portrait of King John on the obverse.

There is a version of the Type III Silver Medal that was awarded specifically for heroic efforts and life saving during the avalanche in Schmilka in 1862.

This Schmilka avalanche version of the Silver Medal featured the same obverse and reverse design as the normal Type III medals, but it had extra text added to the obverse inscription.
