Physical Description and Item Details


A smooth circular medal with a raised edge, constructed of gold. The obverse features the right-facing portrait of Duke Karl Günther, with the circular inscription ‘KARL GÜNTHER FÜRST Z. SCHWARZB. SONDERSHAUSEN’. The reverse features the inscription ‘FÜR RETTUNG AUS GEFAHR’ (‘for rescue from danger’), surrounded by a wreath of laurel and oak leaves. On a loop for suspension, on a yellow ribbon.

History


The Life Saving Medal was instituted in 1868 by Prince Günther Friedrich Carl I. It was conferred upon individuals who risked their own lives to save others from life-threatening danger.

In 1880, Prince Karl Günther became the ruler of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and the medals were altered to feature his image on the obverse. The Gold Medal was not introduced until 1890.
