Physical Description


A circular medal with a raised edge, constructed of silver. The obverse features the crowned monogram ‘F’, surrounded by the inscription ‘GOTT ZUR EHR DEM NÄCHSTEN ZUR WEHR’. The reverse features a firefighter helmet, two crossed axes, a hose, and a rope, surrounded by the circular inscription ‘FÜR VERDIENSTE UM DAS FEUERLÖSCHWESEN 1913’ (‘for merit in firefighting 1913’). On a loop for suspension, on a black ribbon with inner red and outer yellow borders.

History


The Fire Service Medal was instituted on January 20, 1913 by Prince Friedrich of Waldeck-Pyrmont. The medal was conferred upon individuals who rendered at least 25 years of voluntary fire service. In addition, it was also awarded to individuals who made a special contribution toward the firefighting efforts in a specific community or in Waldeck as a whole.
