A Spanish Cross for Next of Kin - Made of bronze, and of very fine quality with crisp details, mounted as worn as a single decoration, in extremely fine condition. Measures 41.2mm(w) x 43.5mm(h);scarce. This award was established the same day as the Spanish Cross, to commemorate those legionaries who fell during the Spanish Conflict. The award is a smaller version of the Spanish Cross with swords and as produced from bronze or brass, both with a bronze wash. As with the Spanish Cross, the reverse is plain. This award was presented to the next-of-kin of those killed or missing in action or if death occurred due to war related sickness. A total of 315 awards were presented making this a rare item.
The Cross was instituted on April 14, 1939, and was conferred upon the next-of-kin of all men who were killed, or died due to illness during the campaign. It was also given to the next-of-kin of men who died due to injury or who were presumed dead.
The Cross was awarded in only one grade, bronze without swords.
There are two versions of the cross; the first version features non-perforated swastikas in the talons of the eagles, the second version features openwork swastikas in the talons of the eagles.
