History

On March 25, 1933 the DLV (Deutscher Luftsportverband = German Air Sports Association) was created as a civilian sports organisation, the umbrella organisation of all air-related sports. However, from the very beginning, the DLV was used to secretly train its members for future roles in the newly emerging Luftwaffe, a breach of the terms of the Versailles Treaty.
The organisation should not be confused with the Deutscher Luftfahrtverband (also abbreviated DLV), which was formed in 1902, but disbanded in favour of the new DLV under Third Reich rule.

The DLV was split into two groups, the civilian section and the secret military section, known as the “Fliegerschaft” (air crew). The organisation eventually became obsolete after the official unveiling of the Luftwaffe in 1935, and it was disbanded and replaced by the National Socialist Flyers Corps (NSFK or Nationalsozialistisches Fliegerkorps) in 1937.

The cap insignia exclusively used by the DLV is in the form of two different types, A and B.

Type A was inherited from the Deutsche Luftfahrt (DL) glider pilot caps and was continued to be worn by glider pilots of the DLV. It was worn on the front center of the cap band. The insignia is a red circle with a set of silver-coloured wings, with a superimposed black swastika on a vertical silver-coloured propeller. Initially, a metal version was used by all ranks, later a hand-embroidered silver-coloured version was introduced for Officer ranks.

Type B was worn by all members of the Fliegerschaft and by the regular full-time members of the DLV. It was never worn by members of the glider section. It was attached to the front center of the cap band. The insignia features a national rosette inside an open wreath of oak leaves, with wings to the sides. A metal version was worn by lower ranks, later, a hand-embroidered gold-coloured version for the top two ranks and a silver-coloured one for Officer ranks was introduced.
