The Badge was founded by Major Kobe von Koppenfelds with the permission of the Generalkommando of the Landwehrkorps. It was conferred upon all volunteers who served for a month in the Freikorps and rendered irreproachable service.
The original badges featured a lacquered medallion, but following complaints from Officers in the Freikorps the badge was given an enamelled medallion.
The Badges were awarded from 1919 to 1923, and there were approximately 6,500 badges produced by Paul Meybauer in Berlin. The total number of badges manufactured is unknown.
