The National Assembly of the Hungarian People’s Republic established this Order as a Hungarian version of the Soviet Union's Order of the Red Banner.
The Hungarian Order was awarded to members of the Hungarian the Armed Forces, law enforcement, and civilians whose meritorious service has increased the reputation of the Hungarian Armed Forces.
There are two main version of the Type II awards.
The Type II awards conferred from 1954-1957 feature the 1949-1956 emblem of the Hungarian People’s Republic on the bottom of the obverse wreath. There were approximately 220 conferrals of these awards with the 1959-1956 emblem.
While the Type II awards conferred from 1957-1990 feature the 1957-1990 emblem of the Hungarian People’s Republic on the bottom of the obverse wreath. There were approximately 594 conferrals of these awards with the 1957-1990 emblem.
