The Medal for Gallantry for Saving Life at Sea was the first medal created by the Irish Free State. It was established by the Irish Minister of Industry and Commerce and was awarded to Irish citizens for acts of gallantry in life-saving rescues at sea. It was replaced by the Deeds of Bravery Medal in 1947.
Only one Medal was ever awarded to Skipper Alfred Britton in 1924 for saving the lives of the crew on the yacht “Siren.”
