Established by King Oscar II, in commemoration of the Arctic Fram Expedition from 1893 to 1896, this Medal was conferred upon the 1893-1896 expedition participants.

This Medal was later conferred upon 1898-1902 expedition's participants.

Exploration in 1893-1896 was done by Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen, and exploration in 1898-190 was done by Norwegian explorer Otto Sverdrup.
