Footnote: The medal was first instituted in April 1828 during the reign of Tsar Nicholas I. After the death of Tsar Alexander II, the medal was redesigned and issued around 1894, bearing the likeness of the new sovereign, Tsar Nicholas II. The medal was bestowed upon individuals for deeds involving the saving of lives in peril.
This medal was awarded to an individual who "risked their own life to save another".
The 1834 version does not have an oak wreath on the reverse, and the 1846 version features a mustached Tsar.
If a recipient already has been awarded the medal but does another deed to save another life they may receive a bow to the ribbon.
The obverse inscription translates to "BY THE GRACE OF GOD NICHOLAS I EMPEROR AND AUTOCRAT OF ALL RUSSIAS" and the reverse translates to "FOR LIFE SAVING".
