Physical Description and Item Details

Grand Cross Set. 1st Model of this type of Russian order of St. Stanislas with deep pro-truding arms of the cross. The grand cross features gold and enameled construction with painted medallions. The sash is not included. The eagles between the arms of the cross rendered in especially fine chased goldsmith quality with Saint Petersburg city mark. Under the translucent red enamel of the lower arm of the obverse cross, maker mark “IP” for the court jeweler Emanuel Pannasch, St Petersburg. The suspension ring marked with barely readable date “183.”, most likely 1835. The silver breast star features gold and enamel construction with motto “Praemiando Inctiat” applied to highly vaulted white enameled banner. Center medallions feature painted enamel with green enameled banner featuring burned-in gold foiled oak leaves and blossoms. Reverse features fine gilding. Both examples come together with original red Moroccan leather case. The lid exterior with gold embossing and the interior with ivory colored felt insert along with gold embossed lift compartment for sash. Important, magnificent early set from the exclusive distributor of Imperial Russian orders, Emanuel Pannasch. This particular set of great rarity.

History

Originally this was a Polish Order created on May 7, 1765 by King Stanislaus II, to honour the Patron Saint of Poland, St. Stanislas of Krakow (see POL101).

This Order became a Russian Order after the Polish Rebellion of 1830, when Polish forces were suppressed. It was adopted as a Russian Order in 1831.

The version with an eagle in the center was awarded to Non-Christians, and the version with swords was awarded to military personnel.

The obverse features an inscription, translated as "Encourages by Rewarding".

The earliest stars was embroidered version.
