History

The Brunswick Medal for Waterloo was established by the Prince Regent, the future King George IV, in 1818. The Medal was created in commemoration of the Duke Friedrich Wilhelm of Brunswick who died at the Battle of Quatre Bras on June 16, 1818. It was awarded to participants of the Battle of Ligny on June 16, 1815, the Battle of Quatre Bras on June 16, 1815, and the Battle of Waterloo on June 18, 1815, who hailed from the Duchy of Brunswick.

The Medal was manufactured from the bronze of French guns captured in the aforementioned battles. The reverse inscription translates to "His Brunswick Warriors, Quatre Bras and Waterloo."
