History

The Indian Mutiny Medal was established on August 18, 1858. It was awarded to the Officers, and other ranks of the British Army, the Royal Navy, and the Honourable East India Company Army who fought to suppress Indian rebels during the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

The Medal could be awarded with clasps that denote participation in at specific sites. Multiple clasps could be awarded to the same recipient, with 4 clasps being the most awarded to one recipient. The following 5 clasps were officially awarded:

1. "DELHI"
2. "DEFENCE OF LUCKNOW"
3. "RELIEF OF LUCKNOW"
4. "LUCKNOW"
5. "CENTRAL INDIA"

Medals were generally officially impressed with recipient details when awarded to British troops, but medals awarded to Indian troops feature a wide variety of naming styles. There may be additional versions that differ in size.
