History

The Java Medal was established by the Honourable East India Company in 1812 in commemoration of the capture of Java from the Dutch in 1811. It was awarded to all Indian troops of the Honourable East India Company Army who served in the campaign, however, a distinction of rank was made through differences in composition. The Gold Medal was awarded to Senior Officers and the Silver Medal was awarded to Junior Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, and Sepoys.

The Medal depicts the capture of Fort Cornelis on August 26, 1811. The reverse features a Farsi inscription that can be translated to "This medal was conferred in commemoration of the bravery and courage exhibited by the Sepoys of the English Company in the capture of the Kingdom of Java in the year of Hegira 1228." It was issued unnamed and was typically worn on a yellow cord.
