History

The North West Canada Medal was conferred upon the members of local military forces and to 16 British Staff Officers for service west of Thunder Bay against Riel's (second) Rebellion of 1885. Recipients also included the crew of the ship "Northcote", whose medals were impressed.

The Medal was awarded unnamed with or without a "Saskatchewan" clasp. The "Saskatchewan" clasp was awarded to recipients who fought in any of the 3 mains battles along the Saskatchewan River at Fish Creek, Batoche, Cut Knife and Frenchman's Butte.
