History

The Naval Gold Medal was established by King George III in 1795 following the successful action on June 1, 1794, during the French Revolutionary Wars. The victory over the French was highly regarded in Britain and necessitated an adequate reward. The Medal was awarded to the Admirals and Captains who participated the battle on June 1, 1794. The award was also intended to recognize other distinguished Generals in later Fleet actions. It was awarded in two sizes according to difference in rank. The I Class Medal was awarded to Admirals and the II Class Medal was awarded to Captains. It was awarded in this manner until 1815.

The I Class Medal was worn on a neck ribbon, but the II Class Medals awarded for service in The Glorious First of June were issued on gold chains.

The recipient's name and details of the award are engraved on the reverse and surrounded by an oak and laurel wreath.
